Steve's African Adventure - Animal Photo Library... plus a few others

First, A Note about the Photo Locations - Parks and Places

Mkhaya Game Reserve in Swaziland - Established in 1979 to save Nguni cattle, which were close to extinction, and has gone on to include other endangered species such as black rhino, roan antelope, sable antelope, tsessebe, white rhino, elephant and other locally endangered species. Mkhaya Game Reserve is named after the knobthorn tree which is known as mkhaya in siSwati. It is situated in lowveld wilderness in the southeast of Swaziland and is made up of acacia-dominated thornveld in the south and broadleaf sandveld in the north. The reserve has many dry riverbeds, is dotted with waterholes and has a network of game-viewing roads.

Hlane Royal National Park in Swaziland - Prior to the park being public, it was a private royal hunting ground. Hlane, meaning 'wilderness', was named by King Sobhuza II and is now held in trust for the Nation by His Majesty King Mswati III. It is Swaziland's largest protected area and also the largest park. The park and its adjacent dispersal areas covers 30,000 hectares of Swazi bushveld. It is a flat lowland area, covered with ancient hardwood trees like knobthorn, leadwood and tambuti, with some grasslands and shallow pans. Hlane is home to lion, elephant and white rhino, wildebeest, zebra and impala.

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in Swaziland - Swaziland's oldest protected area. Mlilwane means Little Fire, a reference to the many fires started by lightning strikes on Mlilwane Hill. The Sanctuary covers 4,560 hectares in the Ezulwini Valley or "Valley of Heaven". Formerly a farming and tin mining area, the area has been rehabilitated and is now Swaziland's most frequently visited reserve. Abundant wildlife grace the plains. The southern section is predominately open grassland plains with middleveld vegetation, stretching up onto Nyonyane Mountain. Tourist activities are concentrated in the southern section which can be explored by foot, horseback, mountain bikes or vehicle.

Sabi-Sabi Lodge in Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve in South Africa - A private game reserve in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. The Sabie River and the Sand River flow through the park, which has an area of 60,000-65,000 Ha. Situated near to the Kruger Gate, the park shares a common 50 km unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park to the east. The Sabi Sand Reserve is the oldest of all the private reserves in South Africa. It has only ever been a wilderness area and is home to a vast wildlife population, including The Big Five, and a number of endangered species too.

The Elephant Sanctuary in Hazyview, Mpumalanga, South Africa - Provides the experience of a lifetime for visitors who really want to touch the wild and walk with the elephants with trunk-in-hand. All the African Elephants at the sanctuary have been rescued and their trust gained through unique reward based training.

The Jane Goodall Institute Chimpanzee Eden in Nelspruit, South Africa - Commonly referenced as Chimp Eden, is a 1,000 ha (2,500 acres) game reserve and sanctuary for rescued chimpanzees, in the Umhloti Nature Reserve. Its purpose is to provide a permanent and safe home for chimpanzees who are rescued from abusive and unfortunate circumstances from areas where these great apes are being constantly exploited by humans through the bushmeat trade, pet trade and entertainment industries. At the sanctuary, the chimps are rehabilitated with the help of their care takers in being re-introduced back into chimpanzee social skills such as learning how to climb trees and live in a social group with others of their own kind.

Boulders Beach in Simon's Town, South Africa - A sheltered beach made up of inlets between granite boulders, from which the name originated. It is located in the Cape Peninsula, near Simon's Town towards Cape Point, near Cape Town in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is also commonly known as Boulders Bay. It is a popular tourist stop because of a colony of African Penguins which settled there in 1982. Boulders Beach forms part of the Table Mountain National Park.

Elephants - Mkhaya Game Reserve, Hlane Royal National Park & The Elephant Sanctuary
Seeing the Large bull elephants in nature is quite a sight to behold.
Touching and feeding them at the Elephant Sanctuary was a one-in-a-lifetime experience.
We got very close to them while on safari, but we carefully backed away as
the young Bull Elephants approached the Land Rover.

Giraffes - Mkhaya Game Reserve, Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve and Rural Botswanna.
They are graceful and appear to be gentle giants. I never knew their
spots were so jagged. All appear to be very cute!

Hippopotamuses - Hippos - Mkhaya Game Reserve and Hlane Royal National Park.
I was fortunate to catch a Hippo out of the water. He ran into the pond with a huge splash. I was also lucky to catch the hippo calling out with his mouth opened. Most of the day, they lurk just below th ewater surface only showing the tops of their heads. The Hippo crossing sign was from the Hazyview area of South Africa.

White Rhinoceroses - Rhinos - Mkhaya Game Reserve, Hlane Royal National Park
and Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve.
White Rhinos are actually Grey! They are quite large and appear as though they are some sort of dinosaur. While on safari at Mkhaya, white rhinos came right up to the Land Rover to rub and scratch agaisnt it. I could have touched the Mother Rhino. Rhinos were most abundent at Mkhaya and Hlane, and rangers there were on constant patrol for poachers and their snares.

Zebras - Mkhaya Game Reserve, Hlane Royal National Park and Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary
and also at Sabi-Sabi Game Reserve South Africa.
Zebras are very skittish since Lions prey upon them in the wild.
The Zebras in Mlilwane, protected from Lions, were fairly calm and the most photogenic.
Hope you enjoy the close-up shots showing their facial stripes.
